Formula For Babies

Breastfeeding is one recommended option of providing babies with all the nutrients and immune system essentials they need. However, for many mums, breastfeeding just isn’t an option, whether by medical conditions or choice. Today’s quality formulas for babies are designed using the best available science and nutrition information to develop the formula.

New parents sometimes hear about some problems associated with feeding infants cow's milk, and so shy away from formula. But all commercial formulas from the big brands are safe and nourishing.

Interestingly, cow's milk is not a preferred food source for babies under 12 months. That's mainly because it doesn't have the same percentage and type of proteins, fats, carbohydrates and other compounds that is needed for optimum growth. Such as macro and micro nutrients found in natural human breast milk. Also some babies are lactose intolerant.

Formula for babies based on normal cow's milk isn't just your regular dairy milk product in a different container. The infant formula is carefully prepared and manufactured. The cow's milk fats and proteins are changed to imitate the nutrients of human breast milk.

For those few newborns that have difficulty digesting cow's milk-based infant formula, there are some good options.

Soy-based formula is one healthy choice. They're useful primarily for those babies who lack the enzyme to correctly break down lactose, the natural sugar in cow's milk. Remember to get soy formula, not soy milk as the latter is not appropriate for infants.

There is a specialized formula for babies called protein hydrolysate. It is another alternative for those who have some types of milk allergies. The proteins in this baby formula are already broken down to products that would result from natural digestion. For those babies who are born with a family history of milk allergies and problems, it can be a lifesaver.

Beyond the general group of ingredients, there are many types of formulas for babies. They differ primarily in cost and convenience.

Powdered infant formula is the least expensive. It's designed to be mixed with water and depending on where you live, it may be safe to mix with tap water. However, many mums and dads will want to use bottled water to ensure purity.

Concentrated liquid formula is also intended to be mixed with water and it has the benefit of being easier to get ready, but also requires careful measurement, just like powdered formula. The correct ratio of formula to water is essential for optimal nutrition and easier digestion.

Ready-to-use formula for babies is already pre-mixed to the exact concentration, but it is also the most expensive. Like the others it can be fed warm or cool, whichever the baby prefers.

All formulas for babies are nutritious and safe, but they all should be prepared with clean, sterile utensils.

Prepare the formula by following the manufacturer’s exact recommendation and feed only what the baby wants. Babies get hungry according to an internal clock, not the one on the wall. Formula for babies is a great timesaver and convenient.
