Selecting Baby Names
Baby names often tend to go
through cycles with certain names gaining popularity for a
time and then falling out of fashion while another batch
of names becomes popular for a season.
Typically those names that go in and out of vogue are
associated with well-known actors, actresses, athletes, musical
artists, or the fictional character names from popular
television shows or soap operas.
For instance, Tori, Kirk, Brooke, Brett, Wynonna, and Garth are
names that many people may associate with someone in the
entertainment world.
Still other names have a timeless appeal and continue to be
popular with generations of parents. Often, these are
traditional names are taken from the Bible or famous
literature-either the names of characters or the authors
themselves.

Ever popular timeless and
traditional names include David, Michael, John,
Luke, Matthew, Joseph, James, Mary, Sarah,
Elizabeth, and many others taken from the
Bible. Famous names from literature include
Rhett, Scarlet, Meg, Beth, Louisa, and many
others.
For parents of the Catholic faith, names may also
be selected on the basis of a patron saint chosen
for their child, like naming a child Theresa or
Paul in honor of Saint Theresa or Saint Paul. Other
faiths and cultures similarly have names that may
be used as a matter of tradition, such as Elijah,
Levi, Rebekkah, Muhammad, Salim, Emiko, Akashi,
Chen, Cong, or Le.
Sometimes names are handed down from generation to
generation as a family heritage and parents and
grandparents are honored by the tradition of naming
newborn children after them-using either a first,
middle, or perhaps even maiden name. This is where
some seemingly odd combinations of names can arise,
as well. George, Virginia, Dorothy, Clarence,
Josephine, and Edward are names that have endured
throughout generations for just this reason.
Baby names selected may also be heavily influenced
by race, culture, nationality, or geographic
location-such as Pedro, Guadalupe, Nakesha, Tyrone,
Bubba, or Carly Sue.
There are many baby name books and websites that
provide one or more meanings that have come to be
associated with a name, and parents may also select
or eliminate names based on the meaning of the name
itself, as well.
