Baby Care

Caring for your newborn can be a challenge, as proper baby care takes a lot of time and effort. Here are a few hurdles you may come across.

A colicky baby can certainly be a challenge. Babies with colic seem to cry at the same time every day. You have done everything you can possibly do for your newborn and they continue to cry. Don’t lose your cool.

It sometimes takes the patience to get through this. If nothing else works, try using the football hold to cradle your newborn. Sometimes a new position can be comforting.

Some newborns can teethe quite young. That can bring about different problems like nappy rash, chomping on their hands and screaming. Use a teether that has been put in the fridge, it works wonders. Also make use of baby teething gels.

When changing time comes for your newborn, make sure that you have all of your supplies close at hand. If you are changing a little boy, you want to make sure you keep his penis covered or else you may get a shower! Keep a nappy under a little girl as well for they can wet just as fast as little boys.

Take the soiled nappy out from under your newborn and put it aside. Then take some nappy wipes to clean your baby up. For little girls make sure that you clean all the creases and for little boys make sure all his private bits are well cleaned off.

As you use the wipes, put them in a disposable nappy bag and when you are finished roll it up and dispose of it. If you wish to use powder, now is the time to do it. You may also use lotion. If your newborn has a sore bottom, then you may need to use a barrier cream. They work wonders!

Slip the fresh nappy under your newborns bottom and draw up the sides firmly and Velcro closed. You should also clean your baby’s umbilical cord with alcohol swabs until it falls off. Also, only give your baby a sponge bath until the stump of the umbilical cord falls off.

The last thing to cover is how do you keep your newborn occupied when they are old enough to look around and see the world? Bouncing on the knee always works. Today there are so many products to help keep your baby occupied that your job will be relatively easy.

The first thing your newborn will notice is their cot mobile, the gentle movement and sounds as it goes round and round keeps them amused for long stretches of time. There are bouncers that have toys attached and soon your baby will be batting at them.

There are mats that you can lay on the floor that are brightly coloured and have toys that hang down. This is good not only for tummy time but for back time as well. Don’t be scared that your newborn is becoming more active. That is just a part of growing up.

Hopefully, we have given you some helpful tips on how to deal with your newborn. Remember, none of us went to parenting college so we will not do things perfectly. Life is new to your baby, while they are also learning about life!

Take your cues from your newborn and continue your bonding process and soon you will find that your baby has loads of smiles for you!
